El sitio de Rancagua

‘Por la línea corre el tren’ (Along the line runs the train) is an exhibition that tells the story of the 140 years of the Empresa de Ferrocarriles del Estado (State Railway Compay). The exhibition takes a look at the cultural impact that this means of transport has had on the construction of the identity of Chilean society since it was created in 1884. This means of transport became a relevant actor in social phenomena such as migration from the countryside to the city, the emergence of towns and cities, connectivity throughout the country and the transport of minerals, among many other contributions.

Divided into four major thematic axes: Imaginaries, Lives, Technology and Territories, which respectively explore the history of the train in Chile through various pieces of art, historical objects and visual records, among others. It also features works by artists such as Juan Francisco González, Thomas Somerscales and Voluspa Jarpa; old photographs of the traditions and communities linked to the railway system; archival audiovisual records and popular classic songs by Los Prisioneros, Violeta Parra and Los Bunkers.

The work El sitio de Rancagua (The Rancagua siege) shows a scene from Chile’s history and is on permanent display at the Rancagua Railway Station.
