Translation Lessons

Translation Lessons is an exhibition whose central concept is to elaborate the intelligence material on Chile, declassified by the US intelligence services, through actions and lessons of translation from English to Spanish. The work raises the distance of the information contained in the declassified files with respect to the access and elaboration of this information on the part of Chileans, not only because of its SECRET status – a code that encodes the way in which the Cold War power in which Chile was involved operated – but also because of the English language in which the events that occurred in Chile between 1961 and 1991 are presented and narrated, a period implied in the information revealed by the files.

The tension between the English-Spanish languages reveals characteristics of hegemony and the type of modern colonialism that can be inferred from the facts.

Thus, the works in the exhibition are developed and are a proposal of elaboration and assimilation of information through the symbolic paradox which means the translation of a story revealed from the secret and its subsequent release. The works propose an approach to information either through the action of reading, attending the lessons the artist took during 2014- 2015 or through the visuality of the declassified archives themselves.
