CUERPO POLÍTICO/ Archivos públicos y secretos

The intervention work entitled CUERPO POLÍTICO/ Archivos públicos y secretos (POLITICAL BODY/ Public and Secret Archives) proposes through five pieces, the correlation of historical documents and materiality associated with the writing of legal texts, as a historical correlation that reflects different social, political and technical processes in which the writings and paradigms involved in the different constitutions of Chile are involved.

With respect to the documents that are the material and visual elements of the work, they include facsimiles of manuscripts and printed matter from the Andrés Bello Archive -understood as foundational reflections of the republican-, documents from the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Chile and the 1980 constitution -texts that evidence the foreign interventions in that process- and covers of Chilean newspapers and magazines of September 10, 11 and 12, 1980- that legitimize the plebiscite called by the dictatorship to change the Constitution.

With these documents, the work establishes a critical dimension of the notions of archive, including the dimension of the SECRET archive of the Cold War, and how it relates to the notions of Republic and sovereignty, described by Andrés Bello in the document Derecho de Gentes (Law of Nations). As well as contrasting it with the press archives, which reflect the public modes of legitimization of complex historical processes derived from struggles of power and sovereignty, reflected both in the condition of secrecy and the manipulation of the facts, also verifiable in confidential documents written in English.

In another sense, the work visually displays the counterpoint of the material processes involved in the writing of laws, aesthetically arranging the handwritten letter that reflects the delicacy of the impulse of the one who has the responsibility of thinking the collective, as opposed to the censorship of the secret documents that show the power exercised over a society. The matrix, composed of movable type or letters used in the printing press, allowed massive and public dissemination of laws, representing the possibility of changes in the constitution of the people.
